the new moon in virgo is exact on saturday, september 15th at 7:11pm PDT- commencing a new lunar cycle that looks to be quite a powerful one! new moons are times of seeding new things, initiating and commencing on a new path. with the new moon in earthy virgo we have support for starting new things related to health, well being, organization, discernment, hard-work, service and dealing with the mundane reality. with this new moon exact at 23’37 degrees of virgo we have the dark moon in the sign of virgo as well- so there is new energy being activated in virgo at the same time that a death of the old is required. looking at the shadow of the virgo energy in our lives- being overly analytical, critical, judgmental or perfectionist OR alternatively going in the opposite direction and being irresponsible, disorganized, messy, ignoring the details and avoiding dealing with the mundane can be what comes up during the dark moon that precedes this new moon (13th through the 15th).
this new moon is conjunct it’s ruler- mercury is also in virgo and is widely conjunct the sun and moon. the next day mercury moves into the sign of libra- so mercury is at the end of this sign asking us to find completion and culmination regarding our minds, thinking, analytical capacity and perfectionism. this new moon can be very mental- so finding ways to get out of the mind and/or balance it with the heart is key! luckily, when mercury shifts into libra on sunday we can find it much easier to think with the heart- as libra is the sign of the heart and relationship.
another feature of the new moon is venus in leo’s semisquare aspect to the sun and moon. the pitting of the mental/mind-based virgo new moon against the firey, passionate heart (venus in leo) can play out in different ways. in relationships there can be one person who is being the mind/virgo energy and the other is being the heart/leo energy. this can also play out within ourselves- where aspects of our mind and heart are having difficultly converging. with the new moon in the sign of the mind we can embark on a new journey of balance between the two- but it is the mind energy that needs the focus right now. if it is out of balance- thinking too much or not thinking at all- this new moon can highlight the disparity.
jupiter, in the other mental sign of gemini, also squares the new moon conjunction- exacerbating the monkey mind energy tenfold. jupiter is the planet of growth, abundance and opportunity but tense aspects from him can cause us to overdo it, take on too much and even feel entitled. really seeing where we are out of balance and where we need to reign it in is key- but it may not be easy at this time!
to add to the themes of the new moon we have the asteroid persephone conjunct the sun and moon, the asteroid demeter conjunct the north node and the planet pluto getting ready to station direct in less than 2 days (exact on 9/17) AND make his second square to uranus on the 18th. if you know your greek mythology you know that persephone, demeter and pluto have an interesting relationship. in a nutshell- demeter was the mother of persephone who was a maiden and very attached to her mother. she was not individuated and was not a queen in her own right- she stayed in the shadow of her mother. one day she is picking flowers in a field and pluto, the lord of the underworld, yanks her down with him as he wants her for his wife. some see this abduction as symbolic of when the patriarchy took over the matriarchal powers. we can also see this as persephone’s dark night of the Soul where she had to be separated from her mother in order to come into her queen energy in her own right. she ends up marrying pluto and spending half the time above the ground and half time below. as such she is the goddess of birth and death- she is a triple goddess (maiden, mother, crone) wrapped into one. it is interesting to note that after being yanked into the underworld she becomes queen and is the only greek goddess (that i know of) that shares power with her husband and is never cheated on by him. all other greek goddesses tend to be more accoutrements and are constantly cheated on. persephone and pluto/hades have an equal relationship.
with these three archetypes featured in the new moon chart we have an image of our journey into the Underworld and our need to confront our shadows in order to come into our own power. there is something in our lives that needs to die right now- and the new birth we desire is predicated on it. the only way out is through- and to really own our power we need to allow ourselves to be stripped of all that is out of alignment, out of integrity and not aligned with the Soul. this is powerful archetypal energy! persephone is the Dark Goddess so the Dark Feminine energies of magic, healing, insight, power and passion are potent right now- but they must be harnessed! interestingly the asteroid siwa is also on the sun- which is the hindu god shiva who is similar in nature to pluto/hades. they are both gods of destruction and rebirth. so the potent energies and intensity of both possibilities (destruction and rebirth) are heightened right now!!!
the other thing to note in this new moon chart is the fact that the full moon that follows it on september 29th is REALLY INTENSE. more in-depth info will posted about the full moon a few days before it is exact- but to touch on it briefly this full moon will be in aries conjunct uranus and square pluto, activating the uranus/pluto square energies. the breakdowns leading to breakthroughs mantra will be in FULL effect at the time of this full moon. full moons tend to bring things to Light that were previously not looked at/made conscious- and with uranus/pluto involved there can be some major aha moments and shadow energy illuminated. this is a good thing as it is integration of Light and dark that creates wholeness- but it is also INTENSE. the virgo new moon starts a very potent lunar cycle that sees pluto stationing direct, the second uranus/pluto square and a very intense full moon at the end of the month. this one is going to be quite the rollercoaster ride- so hold on tight and get ready to roll with the changes/transformations coming your way!
