the Phoenix
~Death~
from ‘daughters of the Moon tarot’

each moment holds a transformation, a death. it could mean an end to ideas that remain from the past and another way of life. it can also mean the death of oppressive patterns of relating, and the birth of new ones. the universe moves in a constant cycle of death and rebirth: the act of dying itself is merely a radical transformation of energy. we are now beginning to reclaim the death rituals of our ancestors as we realize death is also a birth that requires midwifing.

one kind of death is being stuck in roles and outworn expectations. the more trapped we are in these structures, the harder the change; energy which is not moving stagnates and eventually disintegrates. the process of learning is a transforming experience and can take negative, stagnating energy and convert it to a useful form, such as channeling anger into positive action.

people who are transformers always seek radical change; we take control of our lives. structures have been built up to the point that it is no longer possible to patch up what is wrong. it is time for full-scale reconstruction, and along with that the destruction of old change-resistant patterns.

transformation can be a wild uncontrolled change of consciousness, like that of Kali’s lightening energy; or slow, controlled and voluntary, like the phases of the Moon. we hope that our transformations can be a focused journey, drawing on the wisdom of our deep centers. whatever the vehicle, the Phoenix card represents the death of an existing structure and creation of a new one, accompanied by tremendous powers. she is not a mild or subtle energy and her effects can be clearly seen. it is helpful for the seeker to realize the inevitability of transformational changes, and rather than trying to prevent them, to realize they are a necessary step in evolution.

if this card comes up tilted or reversed, you are resisting or blocking the energy of the Phoenix, if this is the case you will most likely force the energies to build up with possible explosive and disastrous results.
