the passing of whitney houston…

by | Feb 13, 2012 | Astrology Blog

i am sure most all of you have heard that whitney houston was found dead in her hotel room yesterday (2/11).  i was very saddened by this news because of her young age (48), her amazing talent and her deep struggles with addiction and abusive relationship that have been chronicled throughout her life by the media.

of course upon hearing of her passing i wanted to see her chart (i do this with everything- upon hearing that a baby is born, a person has passed, a wedding has occurred, and so on).  so i checked it out and thought i would give my 2 cents here on my blog.  i tend to not get into the celeb stuff as it’s not really my interest and i don’t think analyzing their chart without their explicit permission is really cool- since the chart is essentially a snapshot of the Soul!  but because she has passed and she has made such an impact on so many- i wanted to take a peak and share it with you here.  i will forewarn you that i am going to get a little technical here and there with the astrology lingo- but i will do my best to describe everything to you :)

first of all whitney has a pisces rising (also known as ascendant).  you can see it in her aura- that glow, the mystery, the wide eyed innocence well captured in her photos.  pisces rising is the sign of the mystic, the artist and the romantic.  but its shadow side expresses through addiction, denial, avoidance and victimization.  her pisces rising makes an almost exact tense aspect (quincunx) to her mars in libra in the 7th.  mars is in his detriment when in libra- the warrior is in the sign of the peace-maker.  he is not super happy here as he would rather be out fighting battles, defining boundaries and taking a stand!  both pisces and libra have issues with boundaries and self-definition.  pisces gets lost in everything and libra gets lost in one-on-one relationships.  both signs have difficulty focusing on themselves, their needs and what is right for them- and this is even more so if you have a packed 7th house as whitney does.  with her mars in the 7th there can be a tendency to be drawn to other people who live out her mars for her.  this can play out in being drawn to the alpha male, the dominant one, the abusive one, etc…  and we certainly know that that dynamic played out with bobbi brown- her highly publicized abusive relationship that was on-again/off-again for many, many years.

currently transiting uranus and pluto are approaching their first exact square (6/24).  this past tuesday the 7th venus moved into aries and began triggering the uranus/pluto square by cojoining uranus on thursday the 9th and squaring pluto this coming wednesday the 15th.  both her rising sign and her mars are being aspected by pluto right now- near exact!  transiting pluto is square her mars by 12 minutes.  transiting venus is moving into an opposition with her natal mars- exact when venus squares pluto on wednesday.  she was right smack in the middle of this activation when she was found dead.  earlier this week i posted a blog about how this whole week of the venus/uranus/pluto activation could create an alchemical fire or a destructive fire.  it is clear which one occurred for her.

another significant transit to her natal chart at the time of her death is retrograde saturn at the 29th degree (he just went retrograde last week) conjunct her natal true black moon lilith.  BML is the dark feminine and she contains both Light and shadow.  her gifts are magic, mystery, healing, creativity and self-empowerment.  her shadow includes rage, pain, deep wounding and victimization due to the demonization of her feminine gifts and power (by herself, others or society).  with saturn right smack on top of her BML (exact by 4 minutes!) there is an energy of constriction/repression/depression occurring for her on a deep Soul level.  saturn transits can help us step up and attain self-mastery or they can drain us and leave us feeling broken and incapable.  saturn tests our strength of character and our will to survive.  i am not sure what occurred leading up to whitney’s death- but this transit is very significant and very telling of her inner struggles even in the last moments of her life

one other thing i noticed is that transiting mars, who is currently retrograde, is in her 7th house (where she has mars natally as well) and is quincunxing both her jupiter in aries/1st house and her saturn in aquarius/12th house.  she has the planet of expansion and optimism in the the first house and first sign- showing initiative, drive and unbridled enthusiasm for life!  but she has the planet of restriction, judgement and karma in the last house- showing deep fears, inhibitions and past life karmas.  jupiter rules her midheaven while saturn rules her south node (karma).  with mars essentially making a yod out of her jupiter/saturn- we have the finger of god pointing to the house of the Other.  i am wondering if as more information comes in we might find that someone else was involved in her death.  time will tell.

whitney was a gifted musician and a beautiful woman- but she was also very, very human.  when people of celebrity status die it often captivates hearts around the world- and i think one of the main reasons is because we tend to project all our ideals and dreams onto celebrities.  as such we tend to think of them as infallible and eternal.  yet they are not.  they make mistakes, like us.  and they die, like us.

i hope that wherever whitney is out in the great big Universe she has found the peace, beauty and Love she was searching for.
