the next lunar cycle looks to be powerful as the new moon occurs on sunday december 21st- the very same day that the solstice occurs and uranus stations direct. just one of these events is significant- so having all three occur within hours of each other points to a huge new cycle incoming that revolves around change, shifting foundations/alliances/commitments and a new direction or new foundation being implemented going forward.

the new moon in capricorn happens at 5:36pm PST at the very first degree of the sign- which is why the solstice is occurring merely hours before the new moon is exact (at 3:03pm). the first degree of each sign is the alpha point and it initiates us into the energies that the sign represents. the sun will traverse capricorn for the next 30 days, yet the season of winter (or summer in the southern hemisphere) will take 3 months to complete- so the seeds planted or intentions set at this solstice new moon will carry us into the next month, season and year (until the next winter solstice in december 2015).

the sabian symbol for the 1st degree of capricorn is ‘an indian chief demanding recognition’. this is very apt for capricorn as it is the sign of authority, success and reaching the pinnacle of one’s career aspirations. this new moon is an especially potent time for us each to step up in our lives. step up our game, work harder, have more integrity and take things (careers, relationships, spiritual journeys) to the next level. the coming month, season and year can have an underlying focus on the authority we have over our lives- and what we need to do to create more structure, foundation, mastery and maturity in day to day experiences in our personal and professional lives.

in star sparks elias lonsdale says this about the 1st degree of capricorn: ‘i can develop by discipline and the kind of hard work i am accustomed to, a place inside me that is so steady, so unthreatened, so entirely whole that this dissolves the barrier and the boundary. then i can step forth from my stronghold a free man.’ at it’s Highest this first degree of capricorn speaks this capacity to embrace limitations and constrictions so whole-heartedly that we end up dissolving them and they become our path to freedom. so at this new moon we’d all do well to get clear on what structures, goals or solid foundations we want to call in or further solidify- in addition to getting clear on what structures, goals or solid foundations are merely a prison for us that we need to free ourselves from.

new moons are times to initiate new cycles- but you have to remember the moon is still practically invisible from our perspective on earth when it is new. so the seed potential inherent in the new moon lies in the darkness- and it is not until the full moon that will see the fruition of it. the solstice occurs twice a year- one at the start of summer and one at the start of winter. solstice literally means ‘sun stands still’- and if you watch the sun you will see that it drops lower and lower in the sky as we approach winter solstice, and when winter solstice is exact the sun will literally stand still (meaning he will not keep going lower or higher) and then he will be reborn and start to move higher in the sky as he makes his way from winter solstice to summer solstice. so the winter solstice marks the rebirth of the sun (also the birth of the son!)- and it is also a time of new beginnings/new birth that come out of the deep darkness.

with the solstice new moon occurring at pretty much the same moment (by 2 1/2 hours)- it is HIGHLY recommended to take time to do some kind of ritual or ceremony where you give symbolic reverence to your own darkness and your own Light. winter solstice is the darkest day- and when we have the least amount of Light we are given the opportunity to go the deepest into our own Unconscious (aka shadow or that which we cannot see about ourselves). it’s a very mystical time and when used in a sacred way- immense insight and illumination can arise about our personal path and the way forward that is unique to our Souls.

of course we cannot forget that uranus in aries stations direct on the same day as the solstice and new moon! he does so at 2:45pm- just 18 minutes before the solstice and about 3 hours before the new moon. uranus is the rebel, revolutionary and Great Awakener- and when he is at a standstill he is the most powerful planet in the sky. while the sun and moon in capricorn are about foundations, security and grounding- uranus is about shaking up those foundations, upsetting the apple cart and initiating change. these two very opposite energies converge at this solstice new moon- and the Highest expression of them working together can literally be about breaking free from traditions/expectations/obligations of the past that trap us and keep us stuck, so that we can implement new traditions or structures in our lives that are birthed out of this evolutionary frequency!

yet the shadow side of this energy is that it can seem like we are stuck between a rock and hard place. one part of us wants safety, security and the known- while another part of us wants freedom, liberation and the unknown. this inner division can create inner tension which manifest in outer circumstances that seem very difficult, if not impossible, to navigate. and yet anything is possible when you realize that the only thing you can change, the only person you have control over is yourself! so be sure to take time to focus on YOU at this solstice new moon and be sure that what you are calling in is solely for you and that you are solely responsible for making it happen. if the intentions you set at this time require someone else to do or be something in order for that to happen- you will miss out on the best part of what this solstice new moon has to offer us all ;)

some of the other factors in the chart that are of significance: the day before the solstice new moon we have venus conjunct pluto and square stationary uranus. so shake ups, wake up calls, breakdowns and breakthroughs in relationships, finances, our values and self-worth are up right now. the nodes are also square venus, uranus and pluto- bringing intimations of the T-square the nodes will form with uranus and pluto in january. that will be a huge tipping point in our personal and collective evolution- so pay attention to this week for hints of what that evolutionary journey will demand of you.

both the sun and moon are semisextile saturn, the ruler of the new moon, who is at the very last degree of scorpio- a very karmic degree indeed. the last degree of any sign is the omega point- and we have the new moon at the alpha point of capricorn with the ruler of the new moon at the omega point of scorpio. the 29th degree brings completion, culmination or crisis- depending upon how ready, willing and able we have been to deal with the saturn in scorpio lessons we have been delivered in the last 2 or so years.

interestingly for the last 2 1/2 years we have had saturn in scorpio in mutual reception with pluto in capricorn (meaning they are in each other’s signs) and this new moon sextile saturn echoes that relationship. at it’s best, the saturn/pluto mutual reception has been about facing our inner demons, owning our shadow and being willing to take down structures/belief systems/ideals/traditions in our lives that are defunct, outdated, toxic and unhealthy. this new moon helps us get the last little bit of energy out of that mutual reception.

saturn moves into sagittarius on 12/23- yet he goes back into scorpio on 6/14 and will stay there until 9/18 when saturn officially moves into sagittarius for good. on 12/14 saturn moved into the last degree of scorpio and that was the day that uranus squared pluto for the 6th of 7 times. from 12/14 until 12/23 we have saturn blazing through 29 scorpio- so it would be a good idea to pay attention to the shadow dynamics, karmic patterns and deep lessons you may be dealing with during this period of time. the last degree of scorpio can be very cathartic- but it may require an emotional/spiritual/physical colonic to get you to let go of what you need to let go of ;) whatever is present for you at this time, it is likely to return to be addressed and completed when saturn transits this degree again from 9/1-9/18/2015. so pay attention and take notice of your life right now!
