the new moon in virgo is exact on monday august 25th at 7:13am PDT. this commences a new lunar cycle that has a focus on health, well-being, organization, efficiency, discernment and other practical, pragmatic matters. as new moons are times to plant seeds and set intentions, this new moon is a great time to get clear on what we want to call in when it comes to our mundane lives. this is a great lunar cycle to begin new health regimes, to start new work and to get more grounded and organized in our personal and professional lives. getting clear on what it is we want to set into motion is key- so that we can utilize the new and forward moving energy to move in the directions we consciously intend rather than getting driven by our Unconscious!
this new moon chart is a fascinating one. first of all the sun/moon conjunction does not aspect any other personal or social planets (mercury through saturn)- so the energy generated by both is very focused and intensified. yet the new moon does make a few powerful aspects that are both considered ‘tense’ (versus harmonious)- and that is a sesquiquadrate to retrograde uranus in aries and an opposition to retrograde neptune in pisces. uranus brings in a wild card energy- which is quite opposite of the demure, focused, organized energy of virgo. uranus brings chaos, sudden shifts and changes, upsetting of the order- while virgo is the sign of order!
the opposition to neptune adds a very nebulous, illusory and possibly confusing or deceptive energy we need to be aware of. our conscious minds think they know what is up (sun/moon in virgo) but our Unconscious has all manner of feelings, fears, projections and fantasies to wade through (neptune in pisces). at best neptune can infuse this lunation with dreams, intuitions, psychic impressions and an inner sense of knowing that defies rational thought- but at worst neptune can make us deluded and easily deceived- or more prone to deceiving of others (which will have a karmic payback)! so we really need to do some honest self-check-ins at this new moon. ultimately we want to bridge our dreams (pisces) with reality (virgo). the best use of this new moon actually supports us in aligning the sacred and the profane in ways that help us anchor our spiritual or creative longings in the material world.

the ruler of this new moon is mercury and he is also in virgo- and he is forming a powerful yod, or finger of God/Goddess in the new moon chart. mercury is precisely sextile the mars/saturn conjunction- which brings focused, energy and discipline to our minds, thoughts and perceptions. yet all three bodies are in quincunx aspect to uranus in aries- the wild card. this really is a lunation of challenging our perceptions of reality. is reality what you think? or is what you think your reality? if we hold onto being right and being in control- uranus in aries can really do a number on us to turn our reality upside down so we can see things from a different, more illuminating perspective.
interestingly mercury is highly aspected in the new moon chart- he also opposes chiron and semisextiles venus. the only other planet in the chart that is so powerfully aspected is uranus! mercury is the lower mind and uranus is the Higher Mind- so we can see very clearly that there is a possibility with this lunation to open up our minds to information, ideas and reality in new and changeable ways! the key is to let go of the past and our addiction to being right. they say ‘you can be right or you can be happy’- but i also like the phrase ‘you can be right or you can be free’. i’d rather be free than right- and if you do, too, then this lunar cycle is a time to challenge yourself to question your ingrained assumptions and beliefs and potentially even dramatically change your reality in the process!!!
